How Does Physician Recruitment Work?
Physician recruitment is a core focus of Hearts For Healthcare and we work diligently to bring healthcare professionals to our local area. The process of recruiting a physician is often complex and requires collaboration with many stakeholders and government organizations. Here’s how it works:
1
Alberta Health Services (AHS) must identify the need for a physician
Need Identification
2
Once need is established, AHS must determine which specialties that doctor should have. For example, the need for a family doctor who also specializes in anaesthesiology
Specialist Determination
3
AHS communicated this need to Medical Affairs. Medical Affairs advertises the position
Candidate Qualification
4
Qualified, interested candidates are invited to Cold Lake for a site visit where they meet local physicians and tour our hospital and clinics with a vacancy
Invitation to Candidate
5
H4H engages & hosts a meet and greet to promote our community and provide information on our Physician Incentive Program and the City of Cold Lake Physician Loan Program
Hearts for Healthcare Engagement
6
Ultimately, the decision to accept a position to practice in Cold Lake rests in the hands of the candidate

Jessalyn Weir
Family Physician in Cold Lake
Hometown: Regina, SK
My name is Jessalyn, and I’m a family physician in my first year of practice in Cold Lake, AB. I was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, in a family of five. Growing up, some of my best memories revolved around camping in the prairies over the summer months, and skiing in the Rockies over the winter months. I had a strong passion for learning from a young age, and knew I wanted a career where the learning never ends. I decided to pursue a career in medicine, starting with undergraduate training at the University of Regina in Kinesiology. I eventually went on to graduate from University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine in 2016.
